The Black Hills neighborhood is named for the black walnut trees that once covered the hill it sits on. In the early 1900's people would travel from as far as Chicago in their horse and buggy to gather the walnuts. During World War II, people moved to this neighborhood because they could walk to work at the nearby factories. The neighborhood is home to one store, one church and one school all of which make for obvious meeting spots. During the summer, the community comes together for a block party. There are only three roads that allow access in and out of the neighborhood which the residents feel enhances the community and makes them a much closer knit community.
